I am interested in plant diversity, light competition, and plant allometric growth in grasslands. I focus on understanding the mechanisms, especially light competition, that influence species diversity under global change, such as nutrient enrichment, pathogen, herbivory and shrub encroachment. Specifically, I am interested in using plant allometric growth to uncover the plant size-dependent processes and detect the response from individual plants to diversity. For example, I use the allometry of plant height to indicate species “shape” strategy in acquiring light resources and elucidate the role of light competition in driving species diversity. I am also intrigued by the strength of light competition in driving plant diversity across climate and soil fertility gradients.
